1. Epithet as a lexical stylistic device in English literature

In this chapter we are to present definitions of the epithet, functions and classifications of epithet in the literary text by different scientists. This section of our course work has great significance for the research because the first chapter will provide the theoretical basis for determining the value of the epithet in the book “Gulliver’s travels” by J. Swift. Furthermore, these first paragraphs present the important step in our course work. Various researchers have studied the epithet as a lexical stylistic device in their books and articles. Therefore, this work can be based on their investigations. Besides, our first chapter is essential to achieve the main goal of the course paper.

1.1. The notion of the epithet in stylistics

According to I.R. Galperin “the epithet is a stylistic device based on the interplay of emotive and logical meaning in an attributive word/phrase or even sentence used to characterize an object and pointing out to the reader, and frequently imposing on him, some of the properties or features of the object with the aim of giving an individual perception and evaluation of these features or properties. It is descriptive and indicates an inherent or prominent feature of the thing or phenomenon in question.
Thus, in green meadows, white snow, round table, blue skies, pale complexion, lofty mountains and the like, - the adjectives are more logical attributes than epithets. They indicate those qualities of the objects which may be regarded as generally recognized. But in wild wind, loud ocean, remorseless dash of billows, formidable waves, Heart-burning smile, the adjectives do not point to inherent qualities of the objects described. They are subjectively evaluative” [1; p. 157].
From the point of view of V.A. Kukharenko “epithet is probably as well known to you as metaphor, because it is widely mentioned by the critics, scholars, teachers, and students discussing a literary work. Epithet expresses characteristics of an object, both existing and imaginary. Its basic feature is its emotiveness and subjectivity: the characteristic attached to the object to qualify it is always chosen by the speaker himself. Our speech ontologically being always emotionally coloured, it is possible to say that in epithet it is the emotive meaning of the word that is fore grounded to suppress the denotational meaning of the latter...

Conclusion

First of all the epithet has an important role in English literature, particularly we found its significance in English famous fairytale that called “Gulliver’s travels” written by Jonathan Swift. As we mentioned above, this author used the epithet in the concrete book in a different way. Moreover, our work can perform useful functions at the lessons of stylistics and literature.
So, the theme of our course work is “Epithets in English fairytales: “Gulliver’s travels”. We absolutely consider the given topic according to the plan of our work. Furthermore, in our course paper we thoroughly identified the types, functions of epithets in the selected in advance English fairy-tale “Gulliver’s travels”. This means that we successfully achieved the main goal of the course paper. Let us consider in details whereby it was done.
In the first part of the work we provided the notion of the epithet as a lexical stylistic device, its various classifications and functions in English literature. We explored all theoretical aspect of the topic that can be important to implement the research. Certainly, we scrutinized many books and articles by different scholars, who elaborated this topic before. Also, we contributed that epithet is a stylistic device based on the interaction of emotional and logical meaning in a predicable word, phrase or even sentence used to describe an object subjectively; the overall function of epithet is to give special peculiarities of described object; denoted the classification of epithets on which we have relied on a course of investigation.
In the second chapter of our work we reviewed the stylistic use of epithet in the fairytale by Jonathan Swift “Gulliver’s travels”. The aims and objectives of this process advantageously performed. The algorithm of this procedure was produced. We found fifteen examples of epithet in the concrete literary text, designated its types according the classification above and its assignment in the fairytale. Finally, we provided results of our research to decisively achieve the goal of this work.
Therefore, in the whole work we considered all theoretical aspects of the epithet as lexical stylistic device and disassembled into practice the stylistic use of this devise in English book of J. Swift. During the research, we absolutely confirm the hypothesis of our work and we may boldly state that the usage of epithets in the literary expands the readers perception of the world.
The prospect of our course work is to continue the analysis of this lexical stylistic device in the whole book “Gulliver’s travels”. This analysis may be performed by the same methods. Undoubtedly, this research can be beneficial for many people who are interested in stylistics of the English language.
All in all we think that the epithet is an important part of whole process of teaching and learning English.
