RESEARCH PAPER
Topic:
IS IT GOOD THAT THE RECOMMENDATION SYSTEM SPY ON ME?
Student:
1. INTRODUCTION
Recommender systems are necessary for sites such as YouTube, Amazon, Netflix. As Jeff Ullman
says in his Mining of Massive Datasets, recommendation system is an extensive class of Web
applications that involve predicting user responses to options. It uses two different technologies:
· Content-based systems examine properties of the items recommended: for example, in
Netflix if user watches many horror films, recommended films will be horrors.
· Collaborative filtering systems recommend items due to similarity measures between
users and/or items. The items recommended to a user are those preferred by similar users.
We should admit that recommendation system really helps users to find needed items without
searching it. Thus, user can spend more time on the site if he finds more and more interesting, for
example, videos on YouTube. Thereby, sites and users have mutual benefit: “On one hand, they
help users filter through enormous numbers of available items, and focus on the few ones that
match their preferences; on the other hand, recommender systems help enterprises increase their
sales.”(TANGENT: A Novel, “Surprise-me”, Recommendation Algorithm, Kensuke Onuma,
Hanghang Tong). All this seems so wonderful, but how exactly recommendation system
recommends us items? Certainly, they collect the information about what we watch, what we
search and use the information. This fact may seem impermissible, but many sites do it, and their
work depends on it.
2. WHY RECOMMENDATION SYSTEMS SPY ON US?
Sites such as YouTube, Netflix or Amazon collect the information about their users according to
their activity on the site. Usually it is implemented better with authorized users, as search history
and/or history of watched items can be recorded and linked to the user. Sites recommend items
using special techniques to increase its usefulness, effectiveness and sales (Amazon, Netflix).
They earn money on it.
YouTube uses collected information not only to recommend videos, but also to show ads. For
example, if you watched some videos about Japanese cosmetics or Japanese make up tutorials it
may give you some advertisement linked to Japanese cosmetics in the field of recommended
videos.
We all know that one big web system spies on us. It is Google. It collects the information about
what websites we visit, what information we search. Google does it, again, to show us the ads
that are connected to our searches. Therewith, some people say that Google sends collected
information to government.
Besides collecting information about us, some websites use our cookies files, where all visited
websites listed. That is why we can see on some websites ads from other websites. For example,
if you visit lamoda.kz you may see then advertisement of Lamoda on other website such as
vk.com. The same situation with other internet shops (wildberries, lensmark, besmart, etc).
Also, cookies are used by Facebook to show ads.
Thus, we can say that recommendation system spy on us to filter items for us, or to show
probably interesting ads.
3. PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE THE FACT THAT SOMEONE SPIES ON THEM
If somebody tells you that he/she spies on you and then offers you some things according to the
collected information about, you will be shocked. However, today in the internet we stopped
paying attention to it. Some people say that it is okay and very helpful, some people even do not
know about it, but other people are against such shadowing for various reasons.
One reason is that people do not like that websites collect all information about what they watch
and/or search, because someone can capture it and use in his/her aim, or this information may
become public in a few years. Furthermore, some information may be extremely private and
nobody should know about it, as it may inflict harm.
The second reason is that people do not like the advertisements, despite it can be connected to
things in which they are interested. As you know, ads are annoying and distracting. Moreover, if
you have just started to be interested in something, ads connected to it may badly affect the
hobby and you will lose interest to it.
Another reason is that people do not like things that recommendation system recommends them.
Some users of YouTube say that they do not use recommended videos, as these videos are not
that they want watch and it is better to search needed video. Also, there is some problem when
you watched some specific videos like “моя ужасная история” and you no longer want to watch
it, but, anyway, YouTube recommends it to you. The same situation with ads on different sites:
once, you tried to search some strange information, that you do not want to see again, but your
browser or Google remembers it and gives you ads connected to it. So, such an intrusive service
may be frightening.
4. CONCLUSION
In conclusion I want to say that we cannot claim that it is wrong, or it is good that
recommendation systems spy on us, because like all other things, it has its positive and negative
sides. Of course, such systems help people find needed things, saving time, not searching it by
themselves, and it helps not only people, but websites as well. Thus, websites can enhance their
popularity, number of visitors and usefulness. Moreover, now we live in Internet era, so
recommendation systems have become an integral part of many websites and e-commerce.
Even, having a lot of good features recommendation systems have bad sides, as these systems
are not so ideal yet, and as they spy on people and, in some sense, it violates people’s privacy.
